ARIZONA OUTDOORS
The Valley of the Sun is located in the heart of the Sonoran Desert which extends from central Arizona into Northern Mexico. The Valley of the Sun is so named because it has mountain ranges nearly surrounding it. Northeast are the McDowell mountains, east are the Superstitions, to the south is the Estrella mountain range and to the west lie the White Tank mountains. There are 6 lakes within a drive of 1 1/2 hours available for picnics, boating and fishing. There are on the average 300 sunny days each year, which gives lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation. When it does get too hot during the summer months there are cool forests at higher elevations within a 90 minute drive.
Bicycling, jogging, skating and walking
The Valley has over 500 miles of bike paths, with more being added every day. 150 miles of bikeways link parks and other points of interest. Phoenix has bicycle racks on all city buses, in the event you want to take a one way ride. For detailed maps call Phoenix Parks and Recreation at 262-6861 or you can contact Arizona Department of Transportation by calling 506-4117
Hiking and walking
With all of the mountains around the Phoenix area there are tons of wonderful hiking opportunities. Many miles of hiking trails lie in the city within a few minutes drive. The Arizona Travel Club schedules hikes every weekend and is a great source of information.
